The rule that changes every estimate in South Boston

Burning yard waste and leaves is prohibited inside the town limits. Flat prohibition, published by the Town.

The free curbside leaf program runs from late fall to about February 1, raked over the curb — and the piles have to be free of sticks. Bagged leaves are collected year-round on request through Public Works at (434) 575-4260.

Here’s what the town’s published program does not address: limbs and brush. There is no stated size limit, no stated schedule, and no provision for contractor-generated debris. Read that as what it is — every stick from a tree job in South Boston is a haul-off cost. It should be on your estimate as a line item before anyone starts.

The Dan River is the defining fact of tree work here

The town’s original site was abandoned because it flooded, and the settlement was moved north. The river still runs along the southern edge.

The National Weather Service gauge at South Boston sets action stage at 18 feet, minor flood at 22, moderate at 29, and major at 34. The record crests are not ancient history:

  • 33.37 ft — June 24, 1972 (Hurricane Agnes)
  • 33.22 ft — September 8, 1996 (Fran)
  • 31.47 ft — April 28, 1978
  • 31.4 ft — October 13, 2018 (Michael)

And it keeps happening. In April 2017 the river hit 29.96 feet and closed portions of US 501 and US 58. In February 2020 it reached about 29 feet, and State Police closed the junction of US 501 and US 58/360 while the approach to Watkins Bridge went under. In November 2020, the remnants of Eta pushed it to roughly 31.5 feet.

What that does to trees: bottomland trees along the river sit in repeatedly saturated soil. Root systems in ground that floods every few years never develop the anchorage of the same species on an upland site. The failures we see down there are uprooting failures, not trunk failures — and they happen in ordinary wind, not just in storms.

Tornado history is real here too

September 4, 2025 — the NWS confirmed an EF-1 with 105 mph winds about 1.6 miles northeast of Cluster Springs. Path only 0.3 miles, 225 yards wide, lasting barely a minute — and it snapped and uprooted 50 to 100 trees. It formed inside an area of straight-line damaging winds and no tornado warning was issued. NWS notes the region averages about five tornadoes a year, 83% of them EF-0 or EF-1.

November 2–3, 2018 — an EF-2, 125 mph, near Scottsburg on Hundley Road. It touched down first in a wooded area as an EF-0 before intensifying.

Halifax County has 19 recorded tornadoes going back to 1830, including an F3 in March 1969.

A town of narrow lots, short setbacks, and Dominion overhead line

South Boston is Dominion Energy territory — and Dominion is currently building a new regional office at North Main Street and Hamilton Boulevard, targeted for mid-2027.

The residential fabric matters for how we work here. The state’s 2025 historic-district filing describes the neighborhoods as “hilly,” built with narrow residential parcels and short setbacks from the street — modest single-family houses built for factory and mill workers, concentrated from the late 19th century to mid-20th. The South Boston Historic District carries 594 contributing buildings. North Main Street is genuinely tree-lined.

Narrow lots, short setbacks, hilly ground, mature trees, and overhead line means very little of the work here is a straight fell. Most of it is rigging.

Worth knowing: South Boston is roughly half renters — 50.8% owner-occupied — so a large share of the tree calls here come from landlords and property managers rather than owner-occupants. We’re set up for that: written scopes, itemized invoices, and photos for the file.

A town that used to be a city

Small piece of history that explains the jurisdictional oddities: South Boston incorporated as a town in 1884, became an independent city in 1960, then reverted to town status in 1995 — the first Virginia city ever to do so, rejoining Halifax County.

One practical result: Town Planning & Zoning handles zoning, subdivision, variances, and special use permits, but erosion and sediment control and stormwater go to Public Works instead. If you’re clearing here, that’s who you’re talking to.

Three big projects are underway right now — the new 42-bed Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital, the Dominion regional office, and the 42-acre Westside redevelopment — which means active site clearing and utility work across town.

What we do in South Boston

Most South Boston jobs are tree removal on the big shade trees, with the stump ground out once the tree is down. We also run storm damage work here when weather comes through.

South Boston Tree Service FAQs

Can I burn brush in South Boston?

No. The Town prohibits residents from burning yard waste and leaves inside the town limits, full stop. That makes haul-off the only disposal route for tree debris here.

Will the town take limbs and brush?

The published curbside program covers leaves only — loose leaf collection from late fall to about February 1, with piles required to be free of sticks, plus bagged leaves year-round on request. Limbs and brush aren’t addressed in it at all, and neither is contractor-generated debris. Public Works: (434) 575-4260.

What is flood stage on the Dan River at South Boston?

The National Weather Service gauge sets action stage at 18 feet, minor flood at 22, moderate at 29 and major at 34. Record crests include 33.37 feet during Hurricane Agnes in June 1972, 33.22 feet during Fran in September 1996, and 31.4 feet during Michael in October 2018. Riverside trees sitting in repeatedly saturated ground fail by uprooting, often in ordinary wind.
